Freelance Writer / Copy Editor / Proofreader / Fact-Checker
March 2000 – Present. Some of her clients have included:

  • International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)
    Joanne recently started editing articles for this Washinton, DC-Based research center of CGIAR, a global partnership focused on food security and poverty reduction (July 2019 – present)


  • Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA)
    Joanne has also recently started editing publications on the economies of East Asia and Southeast Asia for this think tank cofounded by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The first project was the copy editing of a book by Japanese economist Eiichi Kusano on trade in Southeast Asia. (August 2019 – present)

  • Asian Development Bank (ADB)
    Joanne edits and copy edits reports, brochures, scholarly articles, and books on economic, social, and political development in Asia. Much of this work involves material written by nonnative English speakers. Two noteworthy projects included editing half of the book, Dealing with Multiple Currencies in Transitional Economies, published by ADB in 2009; and copy editing the book, Strengthening the Ombudsman Institution in Asia, published by ADB in 2011. She has done some writing for ADB as well. (August 2009 – present)


  • Emerging Market Media
    This start-up media company features a website called "Emerging Market Views," at
    www.em-views.com. Joanne edited and copy edited advertising materials, opinion pieces, and articles that covered the economies of developing countries around the world. (August 2015 – present)


  • NJTechWeekly.com
    This is a highly regarded website devoted to the tech start-up scene in New Jersey, an up-and-coming region in this field. Joanne copy edits articles by journalists, academics, and entrepreneurs on industry trends and groundbreaking tech and tech-enabled companies. (September 2014 – present)

  • Project HOPE
    Joanne edited a couple of reports for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on the agency's efforts to fight the spread of tuberculosis in Central Asia. She was contracted by Project HOPE, an international healthcare organization that was a partner in these efforts. (November – December 2017; April 2019)

  • Pillar Systems
    Joanne has edited US State Department materials for this contractor near Washington, DC, after having been vetted by the State Department for this purpose. (November 2016 — present)

  • International Resources Group
    Joanne edited project proposals by this contractor in Washington, DC, that were submitted to USAID or the World Bank. (November 2016 — February 2017)


  • Lynne Rienner Publishers
    Joanne copy edited the English translation of a 600-page book by Brazilian economist Luiz Carlos Bresser-Pereira, The Political Construction of Brazil, which presents a history of Brazil's economic, social, and political development since the 19th century. (May – September 2016)

  • AFAR Magazine
    With her proficient French, Joanne fact-checks and proofreads articles on travel, covering hotels, restaurants, cuisine, and especially culture, usually in fracophone regions and countries. (September 2009 – present)


  • Translation One
    Joanne copy edited and reviewed the translation from French of half of the book China Threat? The Challenges, Myths and Realities of China's Rise, by Lionel Vairon, published in July 2013 by CN Times Books. (April 2013)

  • Martinique Promotion Bureau
    Joanne wrote, edited, copy edited, translated (French-to-English), and/or reviewed translations of travel brochures, guides, and government documents. (March 2000 – 2011)

  • DNAinfo.com
    At this New York City news website, Joanne edited and fact-checked a special paid-content section on crime. (Mid-June – early August 2011)

  • African Development Bank
    Joanne proofread and copy edited chapters of their new operations manual. (May – July 2010)

    Joanne has copy edited articles on travel, luxury lifestyle, culture, architecture and interior design, the martial arts. At Viacom Catalyst, she proofread and copy edited marketing materials. (September 2007 – present; the dates vary depending on the client)

  • Assistant Editor, Research — Departures Magazine
    March 2000 – November 2005. Departures is a travel/arts/luxury-lifestyle magazine published by American Express for its Platinum and Centurion cardholders. While there, Joanne:   

    • Fact-checked articles on travel, the arts, luxury products, fashion, health, and personal finance.

    • Edited the letters to the editor for a couple of years.

    • Wrote short pieces for Black Book, the main front-of-the-book section.

    • Wrote in-house fact-checking guide and trained freelance fact checkers.

    Publications Assistant — French Government Tourist Office (in New York)
    June 1997 – February 2000. While there, Joanne:

    • Wrote and fact checked issues of France Insider’s News, a quarterly newsletter for the American consumer market covering French destinations, history, and culture.
    • Fact checked and proofed articles for the yearly magazine, France Discovery Guide; also edited the “Informed Traveler” and “Calendar and Events” sections of the magazine. The France Discovery Guide focused on the regions of France and French culture.

    • Copy edited and proofed advertisements and inserts.

    Graduate Assistan — Department of Development, New York University
    September 1992 – May 1993. While there, Joanne:

    • Wrote and edited articles for the fund-raising newsletter, Campaign Update.

    • Wrote grant proposals for various departments and programs throughout the university.


    NOTE:
    Joanne also did earlier did stints as a copy editor on a book on anthropology; a press aide for a congressman in Washington, DC, writing articles and radio commentary; an assistant editor for the New Leader magazine, and as a freelance writer for the Queens Ledger, a local New York City paper.
